Do we have the ability to Detect DeepFakes?

We have the ability to create deepfakes that can fool the masses did we ever think about how we can stop it? We often see news and videos of deepfakes being created and rarely do we see people talking about how we can stop them. That got me thinking do we have anything in place?! After cruising the web I stumbled on this article "Detect DeepFakes: How to counteract misinformation created by AI was active from April 2020 to January 2022". I learned that three of the major AWS, Facebook, Microsoft had banded together to create the Deepfake Detection Challenge (DFDC). With this group, they held a contest to a bunch of researchers to see if they could determine deep-faked videos in a pool of videos that contain real videos, the winner wins $1,000,000. After the event, they concluded that even algorithmically the researchers couldn't distinctly determine which videos were deepfaked. Even to the human eyes, the researchers weren't able to determine the real ones. It seems like Deepfakes algorithms are making very subtle changes making it difficult for humans and other algorithms to detect. Now not all deepfakes are perfectly made and DFDC has created some tips to help you determine deepfakes:

  1. Pay attention to the face. High-end DeepFake manipulations are almost always facial transformations.
  2. Pay attention to the cheeks and forehead. Does the skin appear too smooth or too wrinkly? Is the agedness of the skin similar to the agedness of the hair and eyes? DeepFakes are often incongruent on some dimensions.
  3. Pay attention to the eyes and eyebrows. Do shadows appear in places that you would expect? DeepFakes often fail to fully represent the natural physics of a scene.
  4. Pay attention to the glasses. Is there any glare? Is there too much glare? Does the angle of the glare change when the person moves? Once again, DeepFakes often fail to fully represent the natural physics of lighting.
  5. Pay attention to the facial hair or lack thereof. Does this facial hair look real? DeepFakes might add or remove a mustache, sideburns, or beard. But, DeepFakes often fail to make facial hair transformations fully natural.
  6. Pay attention to facial moles.  Does the mole look real?
  7. Pay attention to blinking. Does the person blink enough or too much?
  8. Pay attention to the size and color of the lips. Does the size and color match the rest of the person's face?
Can you spot any of these tip in this video?
